What Fast Food Restaurants Accept EBT Cards in 2026?

In most states, you cannot use an EBT card at fast food restaurants. SNAP benefits are usually for groceries, not hot meals or restaurant food. But there is one important exception: the Restaurant Meals Program. If your state participates and you qualify, you may be able to use your EBT card at approved restaurants.

First, Check If You Qualify

The Restaurant Meals Program is not for every SNAP recipient. Under USDA rules, you may qualify if your household receives SNAP in a state with RMP and all household members meet one of these conditions:

  • Age 60 or older
  • Disabled
  • Experiencing homelessness
  • The spouse of an eligible SNAP client

If you do not meet these rules, your EBT card generally will not work for fast food or restaurant meals.

Then, Check If Your State Participates

RMP is optional. States choose whether to offer it, and the program may not be available in every county. Some states with Restaurant Meals Program activity include California, Arizona, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Rhode Island, Virginia, and others. Participation can change, so the safest move is to check your state SNAP website or call your local SNAP office. New York, for example, keeps a participating restaurant page that says it is updated as new restaurants are added. Maryland also lists RMP as a program for elderly, homeless, and disabled SNAP recipients to buy prepared or hot food from participating restaurants and delis.

Fast Food Chains That May Accept EBT

There is no single national fast food list. A chain may accept EBT at one location but not at another. That is because each restaurant location must be approved for the program. Depending on your state and county, participating locations may include restaurants such as:

  • Subway
  • McDonald’s
  • Taco Bell
  • KFC
  • Jack in the Box
  • Burger King
  • Pizza Hut
  • Domino’s
  • Papa Murphy’s
  • Local diners
  • Local pizza shops
  • Independent restaurants

Do not assume every location accepts EBT. Always check first.

How to Find Restaurants Near You

The easiest way is to contact your state SNAP office and ask for the current Restaurant Meals Program list. You can also:

  • Check your state benefits website
  • Search your county’s RMP restaurant list
  • Call the restaurant before you go
  • Look for an EBT or Restaurant Meals Program sign near the entrance
  • Ask the cashier before ordering

This matters because old online lists can be wrong. Restaurants may join, leave, move, or change ownership.

What You Can Buy With EBT at Restaurants

If you qualify and the restaurant participates, you can use your SNAP balance to buy eligible meals. You still cannot use SNAP for alcohol, tobacco, vitamins, supplements, or non-food items. Tips also generally cannot be paid with SNAP benefits.

The restaurant will run your EBT card like a debit card. The purchase comes out of your SNAP food balance.

If Your EBT Card Does Not Work

If the card is declined, it may not mean your benefits are gone. It could mean:

  • Your state does not offer RMP
  • You are not coded as eligible for RMP
  • The restaurant is not approved
  • That specific location does not participate
  • The item is not eligible
  • The EBT system is temporarily down

Ask the restaurant to confirm whether they accept EBT through the Restaurant Meals Program. Then call your SNAP office if you believe your case should be eligible.

Bottom Line

Most fast food restaurants do not accept EBT. The exception is the Restaurant Meals Program, which only works in participating states, for eligible SNAP households, at approved restaurant locations. Before you order, check your state’s current restaurant list or call the restaurant directly. That one step can save you time, confusion, and an awkward moment at checkout.
