A school lunch application can feel like one more form on a long back-to-school list. But this one can make a real difference. If your child qualifies for free or reduced-price school meals, your family may save money every week while making sure your child has breakfast, lunch, or both during the school day. The application is usually short. Many schools let you complete it online, and some families may qualify automatically.
The 2026 School Meal Income Limits
School meal eligibility is based on household size and gross income before taxes.
For the 2026 to 2027 school year, the federal income limits are effective from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. Here are a few examples: For a household of 2, free meals may be available at or below $28,132 per year. Reduced-price meals may be available at or below $40,034 per year. For a household of 3, free meals may be available at or below $35,516 per year. Reduced-price meals may be available at or below $50,542 per year. For a household of 4, free meals may be available at or below $42,900 per year. Reduced-price meals may be available at or below $61,050 per year. For a household of 5, free meals may be available at or below $50,284 per year. Reduced-price meals may be available at or below $71,558 per year. If your household is larger, the income limit increases for each additional person.
What Income Counts?
The application usually asks for gross income. That means income before taxes, insurance, retirement, or other deductions are taken out. Income may include wages, salaries, unemployment, Social Security, child support, pension payments, and other regular income. If your income changes from week to week, use your best estimate based on what you usually earn. Your school district may give instructions for weekly, biweekly, twice-monthly, monthly, or annual income.
Who May Qualify Automatically?
Some children may qualify for free meals without a full income application. This may apply if your household receives SNAP, TANF, or FDPIR benefits. Children who are homeless, migrant, runaway, in foster care, or enrolled in certain Head Start programs may also qualify. If your child is directly certified, the school may already know your child qualifies. Still, it is worth checking with the school office if you do not receive a notice.
How to Fill Out the Application
Most school districts offer an online form. Paper forms are usually available through the school office.
You may need to list:
- All children in the household
- All adults in the household
- Household income
- How often income is received
- SNAP, TANF, or FDPIR case number, if applicable
- Signature of an adult household member
If your household receives SNAP, TANF, or FDPIR, you may only need to provide the case number and basic household information.
What Your Child Receives
Children approved for free meals can receive school meals at no cost. Children approved for reduced-price meals pay a lower price. Some states or districts may cover reduced-price costs, but this depends on where you live. The meals are the same meals offered to other students. Schools are expected to handle meal status privately.
What If Your Income Changes?
You can apply at any time during the school year. If you lose a job, your hours are cut, your household size changes, or your income drops, contact the school and ask to submit a new application. You do not have to wait until the next school year.
Summer Meal Help
School meal support may continue when school is out. Many communities offer summer meal sites for children and teens. Some families may also qualify for SUN Bucks, also called Summer EBT, depending on their state and eligibility. Ask your school district what summer food options are available in your area.
Bottom Line
If the school lunch application looks even close to your situation, fill it out.
It does not take long, and approval can help your child get meals at school while reducing pressure on your grocery budget. If you are not sure whether you qualify, ask your school office or submit the application anyway. The school will review it and let you know.
