If You’ve Taken Zantac, Should You Sue?

The makers of Zantac allegedly hid that the heartburn medicine could cause cancer.

If you have taken Zantac before, you may want to sue its manufacturer for compensation due to any health issues the medicine may have caused.

Outline:

  • What’s happening? – Many believe that the manufacturer of Zantac knew that it could produce health-threatening levels of a carcinogen once ingested. This has triggered lawsuits from Zantac users who have been diagnosed with cancer.
  • Who does this affect? – People who took Zantac (ranitidine) to deal with heartburn and indigestion who were eventually diagnosed with cancer.
  • What can you do? – You could hire an attorney and file a lawsuit against the maker of Zantac to help compensate you for any physical pain, damages, and medical bills you have endured due to taking the heartburn medicine.

New Lawsuits Against Sanofi-Aventis, The Manufacturer Of Zantac

Sanofi-Aventis, the maker of Zantac, is facing lawsuits for not warning doctors and its users about the medicine’s potential to cause cancer. The first lawsuits came after Valisure, an online pharmacy, told the Food and Drug Administration that it had detected extremely high levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a probable carcinogen, in ranitidine products like Zantac. The carcinogen’s detection was widespread, as it was found in every lot tested from multiple manufacturers. According to Valisure’s testing, each tablet of Zantac and similar products contained over 3 million nanograms of NDMA. That equals over 31,000 times the maximum daily limit recommended by the FDA.

As for why NDMA was ever-present in products like Zantac, Valisure noted that ranitidine’s instability caused it to react with itself and produce the carcinogen. Valisure followed up its testing by filing a petition to recall products containing ranitidine, which prompted the FDA to run its own tests. Those tests found unacceptable NDMA levels in ranitidine samples as well. Even worse, the FDA’s testing found that NDMA levels in ranitidine products grew over time, even when they were appropriately stored in normal conditions. When stored in warmer temperatures, NDMA levels grew even more. And the older the products, the higher the NDMA levels.

Was Zantac Recalled?

The FDA requested a recall of all over-the-counter and prescription products containing ranitidine on April 1, 2020. The organization recommended that consumers stop taking any over-the-counter products containing ranitidine and dispose of them immediately. Any patients taking prescriptions with ranitidine were advised to speak to their doctors before stopping the medicine. Lastly, the FDA said that Zantac and other ranitidine medications should not be available for public consumption until their quality could be assured and they could be deemed safe.

Should You Sue Sanofi-Aventis?

If you were diagnosed with cancer after taking Zantac, you should strongly consider filing a lawsuit against Sanofi-Aventis.

What Types Of Cancer Qualify For A Zantac Lawsuit?

A diagnosis of one of the following types of cancer could give you a solid case for suing Sanofi-Aventis:

  • Bladder
  • Esophageal
  • Liver
  • Pancreatic
  • Stomach

Will You Become Part Of A Class Action Lawsuit?

Sanofi-Aventis has been hit with class action lawsuits for falsely claiming that Zantac was safe and effective. These lawsuits typically repay users for whatever they spent on the medicine while ignoring the massive costs linked to a cancer diagnosis. If you have been diagnosed with cancer, suing for damages linked to your life-threatening diagnosis would not be considered a class action lawsuit.

What Compensation Can You Get From A Zantac Lawsuit?

Unlike the Zantac class action lawsuits where consumers could only recover what they spent on the medicine, an individual suit that is successful could compensate you for:

  • Lost wages
  • Medical bills
  • Mental anguish
  • Physical pain

If a family member died as a result of cancer they contracted from taking Zantac, family members could also receive compensation in the form of money for:

  • Funeral expenses
  • Loss of companionship
  • Loss of expected earnings

How To File A Lawsuit Against Sanofi-Aventis

If you or a loved one was diagnosed with cancer after taking Zantac, you should hire an attorney to help file an individual lawsuit against Sanofi-Aventis. Many attorneys handling Zantac cases work on a contingency-fee-basis. In other words, you will only have to pay if you win your case. Payment will usually come from a portion of your judgment or settlement so you can avoid out-of-pocket costs.
