Can You Still Apply for Stimulus Check Money in 2026?

If you missed a stimulus check from the pandemic years, you may be wondering if you can still claim the money in 2026. In most cases, the answer is no. The federal deadlines to claim missed stimulus payments from 2020 and 2021 have already passed. The IRS issued Economic Impact Payments during the pandemic. If someone did not receive the full amount, they could claim the missing money through the Recovery Rebate Credit on a tax return. The first and second stimulus payments were tied to the 2020 tax return. The third stimulus payment was tied to the 2021 tax return.

What Happened to the Recovery Rebate Credit?

The Recovery Rebate Credit was the official way to claim stimulus money you were eligible for but never received. For missed first or second stimulus payments, eligible people needed to file a 2020 federal tax return. For the third stimulus payment, eligible people needed to file a 2021 federal tax return. Those filing windows are now closed. The IRS listed May 17, 2024, as the deadline to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and April 15, 2025, as the deadline to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. That means a new 2026 claim for old federal stimulus check money is generally no longer available.

Why People Missed Stimulus Payments

Many people missed payments because they did not usually file taxes, moved to a new address, changed bank accounts, had a new child, or had income changes during the pandemic. Some people also filed a return but left the Recovery Rebate Credit section blank. In late 2024 and early 2025, the IRS announced automatic payments for about 1 million taxpayers who were eligible for the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit but did not claim it correctly on their 2021 returns. Those automatic payments were expected to go out by late January 2025.

Can You File Now and Still Get a Stimulus Check?

For old federal stimulus checks, I cannot confirm that you can still file a new claim in 2026 and receive the money. The official IRS deadline for the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit was April 15, 2025. That was the last major deadline for missed pandemic stimulus payments. You can still check your IRS account or past tax records to see whether you already received a payment or refund. But if you never filed in time, the federal claim window has likely closed.

Are There New Stimulus Checks in 2026?

There is no confirmed federal stimulus check program open for general applications in 2026. Be careful with websites, ads, or messages claiming that everyone can apply for a new stimulus check, inflation check, or government payout. Scammers often use old stimulus language to collect personal information or charge fake application fees. The IRS warns taxpayers to rely on official IRS information and avoid suspicious messages that promise tax refunds or payments.

Other Help You May Be Able to Apply For

Even if old stimulus checks are no longer available, other assistance programs may still help. Depending on your situation, you may qualify for:

  • SNAP food benefits
  • LIHEAP energy assistance
  • Medicaid
  • Medicare Extra Help
  • Housing or rent assistance
  • Unemployment benefits
  • Disaster assistance
  • Utility hardship programs
  • Local emergency cash assistance

A good place to start is Benefits.gov, your state benefits office, or 211. These resources can help you find programs based on your income, household size, location, and current need.

What to Do Next

If you are looking for missed stimulus money, check your IRS online account and past tax returns first. Look for your 2020 and 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit information.

If you missed the filing deadlines, focus on current assistance programs instead. Call 211 or visit your state benefits website to see what help is available now. Do not pay anyone who promises to “release” old stimulus money for a fee. Real federal tax and benefit programs do not require upfront payment to apply.
